How to use the Library

  • Outside visitors to the Nagoya University Central Library may also browse the Library's collection of materials when they have an academic study,research, or survey theme.
    ※It is not allowed to use the seat and any facilities of the library. For example, on purpose of exam study.
  • It is not allowed to take children to the library.
  • During the examination period(twice a year, on specified days in July-August and January-February), the library is very crowded. Please avoid visiting Library during this period. » Library Opening hours

Browsing and making copies

Search Holdings

  • Search Holdings » Nagoya University OPAC
    ※The materials which location begins with "Cent Lib..."in Opac search results are located in the Central Library.
    ※If you take a note of these "location","cell numbers",and "material ID", you can find the book easily.

 

Entering and Browsing

  • Please fill in the "Central Library Access Application for visitors" at the Information & Circulation Desk,and please show your ID card.
  • Almost all materials are accessible on open-shelves. Please take them from the book shelves and browse.
  • Audio-visual materials may not be used.
  • When you want to use closed stack, Please apply on the web form. Closed stack
  • When you want to use microform resources and doctoral Theses of Nagoya University, please ask at the Circulation Desk.
    (service hours:Weekday 8:30-17:00(can not be borrowed)
  • When you want to use rare books /semi-rare books, Please apply three days (except Saturdays,Sundays,and public holidays)before using them.Please read here and apply. Browsing rare books /semi-rare books

  • If you wish to use the resources of the Central Library for more than 3 months, you can obtain Central Library user card by registering.

Photocopy

There are two types of photocopy machines: coin-operated and card-operated. Co-op copy cards can be purchased at vending machine on the 2nd floor.

Borrowing books

  • You need to apply for a library card in advance for borrowing books from the Central Library.
     To borrow books and renew, you need the library card.
    ※If you are undergraduate or, graduate student of another university, we can't issue a library card(however, Open University of Japan students and correspondence course university students may apply) Please go to the library at your university and ask for the ILL service.
    ※If you are a vocational school or secondary/elementary education school students, high school student/graduate preparing for college entrance exams, or a preparatory school student, we can't issue a library card.

Audio-visual materials and non-circulating materials cannot be borrowed.

 

Renewals an Reservations

  • The lending period can be renewed only once within the return period.(And only if the material is not already reserved by another user. Please return before the due date)
  • No reservations can be made.

Caution

  1. Please strictly observe the return date of each borrowed material.
  2. Please follow the instructions of the library staff.
  3. Please return all books by expiration date of your card.
  4. Please take good care of materials.If a material you have borrowed is lost or damaged you will have to pay compensation.

 

Issuance of Nagoya University central library card

Requirements for applicants

  1. Have an academic study,reseach,or survey theme.
  2. Continuously use the Library at least for 3 months.
  3. You must not be undergraduate or,graduate student(including non-degree student)of another university,a vocational school or secondary/elementary education school students, high school student/graduate preparing for college entrance exams,or preparatory school student (however,Open University of Japan students and correspondence course university student may apply)

 

Caution

  1. If you wish submit your application /collect your Library Card, You must visit the Library in person. Do not lend your Card to anyone else.
  2. When a change occurs in the information on your application form,please promptly inform the Library.
  3. In some cases the screening results may not meet your wishes.
  4. Expiration date of the Library Card is the end of the month falling two years after the issue date. Users who will continue to use the Library must renew their card in plenty of time while the card is still valid.
  5. If you forget your password and you need your password to be reissued, you must come to the Library in person.
  6. Applications by mail, phone or email are not accepted.

 

Application (New)

a) Required Documents

  1. Document proving current living address(driving license, health insurance card, passport, resident card, etc.)
  2. Application for Central Library Card(Forms are also available at the Information & Circulation Desk.)

b) Service Hours

  • Opening hours(until 30 minutes before closing)

c) Issue

  • Please pick up your Card at the Information & Circulation Desk within the receipt period (one week to three months after your application).
  • You must visit the Library in person. Application by mail will not be accepted.
  • To pick up your card, you need the document proving current living address(refer to a) above)

Renewal(if you already have the Library Card)

a) Required Documents

  1. Document proving current living address(driving license, health insurance card, passport, resident card, etc.)
  2. Your current Central Library Card
  3. Application for Central Library Card (Forms are also available at the Information & Circulation Desk .)

b) Service Hours

  • Opening hours(until 30 minutes before closing)
    ※Renewal procedures can be carried out from 3 month before the card is due to expire.
    If your card expires, the renewal process will take three days(excluding weekends and holidays), so please ensure you apply for renewal in plenty of time while the card is still valid.

Changing items recorded on your application/Reissuing your password

a) Required Documents

  1. Document proving current living address(driving license, health insurance card, passport, resident card, etc.)
  2. Your current Central Library Card
  3. Application for Central Library Card (Forms are also available at the Information & Circulation Desk .)

b) Service Hours

  • Opening hours(until 30 minutes before closing)
    ※Reissuing your password will take three days(excluding weekends and holidays).
    Please pick up your initial password form at the Information & Circulation Desk by the due date(You can pick up during three month from three days after the application).

 

Ordering from Nagoya university library (ILL)

Except visiting the library in person, you can order materials from Nagoya University through your local library.
Please note that it may take more than one week to arrive, depending on congestion and where the materials are distributed.

Materials you can order

  • Lending books
    • You can't borrow journals.
    • There are some materials you can't borrow such as books in laboratory and reference books.
    • Return postage is required.
    • Loan period(including shipping and return period)
      Central Library : Books for Reseachers→4weeks、Books for Undergraduates→3weeks
      Departmental Library : It depends on the each rule. Please confirm at the time of application.
  • Photocopies of journal articles, parts of books
    • It costs copying fee(35 yen per copy for black andwhite, 105 yen per copy for color) and shipping charge.
    • If you want to copy more than half of a book, you need the author's permission.
